Eine Webseite für Oliver Jauch

Letztes Wochenende war Kindergeburtstag. Die Tochter von Oliver ist fünf Jahre alt geworden und es wurde groß im Garten gefeiert. “Die Vorbereitungen sind etwas stressig, aber es lohnt sich. Die Kleine wird ganz einen tollen Tag haben”, sagte Oliver noch kurz vor dem Fest.

Einen tollen Tag hatten auch wir, Kirsten Eggers, Oliver Jauch und ich, als wir die Fotos zu seiner neuen Webseite gemacht haben. Wir hatten uns einen halben Tag Zeit genommen, um zwei Portraits von ihm und seinem Auto in seinem natürlichen Lebensraum zu machen: Hamburg.

Da wir die Aufgabe hatten, das Budget entsprechend gering zu halten, sind wir nur mit einem kleinen Team los und hatten am frühen Nachmittag wirklich schon alle Fotos wie gewünscht im Kasten.

Longlist, Shotlist, die Fotos waren zügig ausgewählt, von Kirsten Eggers leicht nachretuschiert und in die Webseite eingebaut. Die Webseite hatte ich bereits nach zwei Treffen und intensiven Vorgesprächen einen Tag eher fertiggestellt. Es fehlten nur noch die Fotos.

How to optimize images for your Facebook site?

Unlike the personal Facebook profile the business Facebook site looks like a jet cockpit.
Everything can be handled — somewhere.

Preparing the images of your post properly will help you getting familiar with the slightly different handling of the Facebook site.

How to optimize images for your Facebook site?

  1. File Type:
    A — Use JPG if you want to see brillant pictures on your site.
    B — Use PNG/PNG8 for text and logos without colorful images.
    C — Avoid using PNG24 or GIF if you don’t have to.
  2. Resolution: Save them in the Retina standard of 144 ppi if you need to show wide images. Use the Web standard of 72 ppi for everything else. In most of the cases you want spot a difference.
  3. Size: Try to save your files with max. 3 MB per image. Facebook will compress your JPG images anyway but now you won’t have to worry about the process.
  4. Colors: Save all the images in a sRGB/RGB color mode.
  5. Dimensions: The Facebook site is highly responsive. Save the images depending of it’s job doing your your site, focussing with any premium information towards the center of the picture.

    B — Cover Image 828 x 315 px — Cover Image Mobile Save Area 563 x 315 px
    C — Picture Post 1200 x 900 px
    D — Carousel Post 600 x 600 px

How to start your own WordPress site?

WordPress.org is a free to use content management system. A huge selection of themes and plugins will give you a broad freedom building very useful and beautiful sites on the web.

WordPress.com or WordPress.org?

WordPress.com provides you with an easy to install blog. You can do some themes and plugins, you can upgrade it for some special web design features and that’s the deal. If you need a blog, fast du install, without bothering webspace, database or site architecture, WordPress.com will be your first choice.

WordPress.org provides you with a free data folder you can upload to any ftp-server you want starting your own website immediately. It’s a bit more time consuming and some need to get familiar with the possibilities and tricks of using it. But if you master it it’ll be a powerful and free tool for building up to date websites for you or for your clients.

Any prearrangements necessary?

We are working with WordPress.org. Therefore, you’ll need:
A — about 500 MB dataspace
B — a functional mysql database
C — your own domain address

WordPress requires about 50 MB but take 500 MB for any additional future data. Mostly you’ll find a “WordPress ready” package including php, your own domain and a mysql database for under 10 € per month. If made very good experiences with united-domains.com [DE] but you’re free to choose your best offer.

But now: How to install my WordPress site?

Chapter One: Upload the files

  1. Download the WordPress.org zip-folder in your language to your desktop
  2. Download a ftp-uploader (like Cyberduck) on your computer
  3. Connect the ftp-uploader with your webspace. You need to know from your provider your:
    A — ftp-servername (like katsudashi.com)
    B — ftp-username (like p1234567)
    C — ftp-port (mostely 21)
    D — ftp-password
  4. Find the html folder on your webspace (the index.htm file should be in there)
  5. Create a new folder within that html folder
  6. Unzip the WordPress folder on your desktop
  7. Upload the unzipped WordPress folder into your new webspace folder via ftp
  8. Open your preferred browser and look for the address
    http://www.your-domain-name.com/your-new-folder-name/wp-admin/install.php

Chapter Two: Installing WordPress

  1. If you’ve done everything properly, enjoy the 5-Steps-Installation:
  2. Part One: Connecting to the database by typing in your:
    E — mysql database address (like usr_p1234567_1, provided by your host)
    F — mysql database username (like p1234567, it’s not your WordPress nor your provider username, it’s a third one also provided by your host)
    G — mysql database password (it’s not your WordPress nor your provider password, it’s a third one also provided by your host)
    H — mysql database host name (like db1234.mydatabase.com)
    I — wordpress database prefix (just keep the wp_, it’ll be fine)
  3. Part Two: Starting WordPress by typing in your:
    A — wordpress site title (which you can change later)
    B — wordpress username (a new one just for this specific WordPress site)
    C — wordpress password (a new one just for this specific WordPress site)
    D — personal email address (as your primary contact address)
  4. That’s it. Done!

Last but not least: How to login to my new site?

If everything worked out fine you’re ready to log into to the backend of your WordPress site. Type your wordpress username and wordpress password into the admin panel of your site here:
http://www.your-domain-name.com/wp-admin

Here we go. You are ready to rumble!

How to deal witth WooCommerce outdated templates?

Sometimes WordPress bothers you because of outdated woo-templates.

  1. Go to WooCommerce/System Status onto your WordPress Dashboard
  2. Scroll down the list and find the out of age php-templates — like this one
    template/woocommerce/cart/cart.php Version 2.0.0 is outdated. Main version is 3.1.0.
  3. Check on the ftp-server were WordPress is installed. You’ll find the updated files inside
    wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/templates
  4. Copy all the required files on your desktop
  5. Find the outdated files of your current theme inside
    wp-content/themes/name-of-your-current-theme/woocommerce
  6. Rename the old files for backup
  7. Upload the new files from your desktop in this very folder
  8. Go to WooCommerce/System Status and check if everything is up to date.
